By Ryan Stieg  ST. PAUL, Minn. — Over its five seasons at the Division I level, the St. Thomas men’s hockey team has had multiple firsts as a program. On Saturday, the Tommies added another one to the list.   Heading into this weekend’s series against Bemidji State, UST had never beaten BSU on a Saturday, but it got the job […]

By Ryan Stieg  ST. PAUL, Minn. — If there’s one opponent that seems to give the St. Thomas men’s hockey team fits, it’s Bemidji State. Heading into this weekend’s series, the Tommies had only beaten the Beavers twice at home.   However, on Friday night, UST’s special teams shined with three power play goals and a shorthanded tally to earn a 5-1 victory over BSU. Tommies goalie Carsen

By Ryan Stieg  It’s now mid-January and even though it is chilly outside, things are heating up in the CCHA standings.   There was a shift in the standings last weekend as St. Thomas jumped into first place with a road win over then-first place Minnesota State and then Augustana joined them at the top after an easy sweep

By Ryan Stieg  Well, that was a rough way to start the new year. After a spectacular ending to 2025 where I went 7 for 8 with my predictions, I only got 3 of 10 predictions right last weekend to open 2026. I had too much faith in the CCHA teams. As soon as Minnesota State and Michigan Tech both lost in

By Ryan Stieg  ST. PAUL, Minn. — After rallying to defeat Ferris State Friday at home, the St. Thomas men’s hockey team hoped to get off to a better start in their rematch Saturday.   The Tommies failed to do so as they fell behind 2-0 just like the previous night, but then they caught fire offensively. UST scored

By Ryan Stieg  ST. PAUL, Minn. — It’s been a month since the St. Thomas men’s hockey team played a game and it showed at times during the first two periods against Ferris State.   However, the Tommies rallied in the third to tie the game late and got the game-winning goal from freshman defenseman Hayes Hundley with 41 seconds left in

By Ryan Stieg  Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great holiday and if you had one, a great winter break.   My break was pretty great. Not only did I get some much-needed time off, but I had a great Week 12 with my CCHA predictions. I went 7 for 8 with my picks and

By Ryan Stieg  It’s that time everyone. I’ve flipped the sign in the window, and the bakery is open again.   Each year, I debate whether this will be the last time I write this column as this is a college hockey website, and this topic goes all the way back to my days at the Mining Journal in Michigan. However, it’s by far my most popular

By Ryan Stieg  Merry Christmas everyone! I hope everyone is having a great holiday and that all of you on winter break will continue to enjoy yourselves.   I’m doing quite well. I’m enjoying a cup of hot cocoa, which was my reward for being successful with my picks in Week 11. St. Thomas came through for me by sweeping NMU and Augustana split its series

By Ryan Stieg  Sports injuries are an interesting thing. Sometimes, they can devastate an athlete, but they can also lead to unexpected opportunities.   That’s been the case for St. Thomas forward Alex Gaffney, who joined the team this year out of the transfer portal, and is now having the best season of his college career. He’s currently tied for seventh nationally in goals with 12 and
